Director's Note

The greatest challenge in bringing Waiting for Naseer to the stage was ensuring it became much more than a static exchange of dialogue. While the original text is undeniably brilliant in its wordplay, a play about waiting can easily fall into the trap of becoming just "two people talking."

To break this mold, we leaned heavily into physicality and raw emotion. We introduced theatrical exercises, competitive sports-like dynamics, and musical elements to keep the energy visceral and the staging dynamic. We were acutely aware that the specific, agonizing hustle of an actor or writer might not instantly resonate with everyone. Our goal was to crack the story open, making it relatable to all audiences—not just theatre insiders or die-hard Naseeruddin Shah fans.

To further ground the story for our audience, we adapted the play's cultural context, localizing it from its original Marathi theatre roots to reflect the specific region where we are performing. By translating the characters' internal desperation into physical action and familiar regional nuances, we hope to have bridged that gap. Ultimately, we wanted to create a piece where every audience member can walk away with something deeply personal, discovering the profound, quiet devastation that the playwright has woven beneath the comedy.

Synopsis

"In this world, there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it." — Oscar Wilde.

Two undead souls. One ticket.

Think about the one thing you are convinced will change everything. That promotion. That person. That moment when it finally, finally clicks into place. Now imagine spending eternity chasing it.

Written by Sapan Saran, this darkly comic philosophical play follows an Actor and a Writer who find themselves stranded around Prithvi Theatre अनमारा (Undead) 0A0A and अनमारा (Undead) 1B1B, two undead souls with one singular obsession: a ticket to see Naseeruddin Shah perform.

The Actor spent his life waiting for the big role that never came. The Writer died on his way to Prithvi for the very first time. Together, they bicker, compete, teach each other, and slowly, reluctantly, reveal the quiet devastation beneath the comedy.

This is a story about the artist's hustle on the surface. But only on the surface. Because while they are waiting for Naseer, aren't we all waiting for our own नसीब (Fate)? The chase looks different for each of us. The desperation is identical.

Waiting for Naseer (abridged) makes you laugh until it doesn't.
